A spokesman for MEA Arindam Bagchi said the rule of law and democratic processes must be established and whatever development which weakens this process is a deep problem.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday expressed his disappointment at the latest developments in Myanmar where the leader who was overthrown Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to four years imprisonment on charges of inciting differences of opinion. His sentence was later reduced from four years to two years.
A spokesman for MEA Arindam Bagchi said the rule of law and democratic processes must be established and whatever development which weakens this process is a deep problem.
“We are disturbed by a recent verdict. As a neighboring democracy, India consistently supports the transition of democracy in Myanmar,” Bagchi said.
“We believe that the rule of law and democratic processes must be enforced. Every development that damages this process and highlighting differences is a deep problem.”
“It is our sincere hope that maintaining their nation’s future in mind, efforts will be carried out by all parties to advance the road dialogue,” Bagchi said.
Myanmar was rocked by massive protests after the military seized power in the coup in February 1. Hundreds of people, including children, were killed in the crackdown of the protesters by the troops.
Suu Kyi, the leader of the Democratic League (NLD), is among the key people detained by the military after the coup. The latest punishment is one of the first in a series of verdications.
